Week 3-Multimedia Learning

with 2 Comments

Most of the principles of multimedia learning are understandable for me. The only thing I cannot understand perfectly is “Temporal contiguity”. People often only can catch the most important information in a short time. Although pictures and words appear at the same time can help people better memorize, when the information become more and more people cannot make it at the same time.

Example of Multimedia Learning

The best example for me is biology labs. Biology labs need to use some fancy equipments such as spectrophotometer, micropipette and so on. When we meet a new equipment, it is hard to use it at the beginning or without learning. Therefore, the lab instructors will show us the picture of equipment and label each button. The picture and word form combined very well. I do not need to spend a lot of extra time for learning using these equipments.

However, not every time I can use multimedia learning well. For example, when I try to take note in multimedia way, I always spend more time on drawing things than actual writing or drawing important things down.

Spectrophotometer

This is an example of how the spectrophotometer works. This image clearly show the working principle of a spectrophotometer. It is much better than just words to express and it is easier for people to understand. This image use “Redundancy principle“. It only keep the most important part of all principles.

Sketchnoting and Multimedia Learning

Sketchnoting means combined some simple drawing symbols and writings together. This is “Signalling principle“. Sketching make people can make deeper memorize of the topic and writing down words again enhanced memory. Sketchnoting is useful. However, I think people need to practice a lot in sketchnoting if people do not familiar with the process, it will take a longer time.
